Community, Fair Play and Healthy Competition.

The San Diego Crew Classic offers the beauty of the sport of rowing, the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, and what it means to be a teammate and to support one another. At the San Diego Crew Classic, young athletes and individuals mature into socially responsible adults who will further the lessons learned on the waters of Mission Bay.

As a 5-time US National Team Member and a rower in the Athens Olympics, Luke Walton has a long history with the spot of rowing which makes him uniquely qualified as the Director of Operations for the San Diego Crew Classic.

10 Things About Luke Walton & San Diego Crew Classic

#1 I grew up in Poway and my first job was as a Lifeguard at the Poway Community Center.

#2 Claire’s on Cedros in Solana Beach is my favorite restaurant.

#3 Believe it or not, my favorite book is “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss.

#4 My favorite movieis Caddy Shack.

#5 I am a Dog person. I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like. I want to like cats, but I am very allergic.

#6 “Life is a series of choices.” I have made some great choices and I have made some not so great ones in my life.  But all the choices have gotten me to where I am today because I stayed true to myself and have always chosen to pursue the things that I am passionate about.

#7 I was in a very bad cycling accident in 2008. The impact/trauma resulted in the loss of my right kidney.

#8 The San Diego Crew Classic is the premiere spring rowing regatta bringing athletes from novice to Olympian together. But the SDCC is more than just an athletic event with competitors at the peak of physical fitness. The Crew Classic showcases some of what San Diego is famous for – great local food, craft breweries and unique shopping – all while enjoying the beauty of Mission Bay.

#9 For me, it’s all about giving back to the sport that has given me so much. Rowing allowed me the ability to compete against the very best athletes across the globe. It shaped me into the person I am today. On the administrative side, I am doing whatever I can to help as many athletes as possible have similar experiences to mine.

#10 The San Diego Crew Classic offers support and funding for the US National/Olympic, Freedom Rows (Wounded Warriors Program), Paralympians, Ergometer Education (an initiative to bring more youth into the sport of rowing), and I Love a Clean San Diego on initiatives to make the Crew Classic the “greenest regatta”.
